Selena Marie Gomez (/səˈliːnə ˈɡoʊmɛz/ sə-LEE-nə GOH-mez; born July 22, 1992) is an American singer, actress and producer. Known for her versatility across the entertainment industry, she is often regarded as a teen idol and pop culture icon. She has received various accolades, including an American Music Award, two MTV Video Music Awards, and nominations for two Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe Award, and four Emmy Awards. Gomez began her career as a child actress, appearing in a recurring role on the children's television series Barney & Friends (2002–2004). She rose to prominence for her leading role as Alex Russo on the Disney Channel sitcom Wizards of Waverly Place (2007–2012). During her time on the series, she formed the pop rock band Selena Gomez & the Scene and released three commercially successful studio albums. The band's split in 2012 saw the release of Gomez's EDM-influenced debut solo album Stars Dance (2013).
